Cheyenne Mountain Resorts Nearing Completion of a $3.8 Million Renovation of it's Championship Golf Course
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO ( May 20, 2013). . . . . Cheyenne Mountain Resort is in the final stages of a major $3.8 million renovation of its Pete Dye-designed 18-hole championship golf course. The course is part of Cheyenne Mountain Resort and Country Club, a four-diamond resort and private country club that extends golf privileges to members and resort guests.
One of the objectives of the renovation was to make the course more challenging. All of the bunkers have been rebuilt and tee boxes have been elevated to reflect the original Pete Dye-style of design. The course’s driving range has been completely redesigned to include target greens which enable golfers to practice their short game. The teaching and chipping areas have also been upgraded. As a result of the renovation, the course’s length will be extended by approximately 47 yards beyond its current yardage of 7,056, and the slope rating will increase.
The renovation also includes several elements designed to conserve water and make the course more eco-friendly. A new state-of-the-art irrigation system has been installed and approximately 15 acres of irrigated turf have been eliminated and replaced with native grasslands. As another way to conserve water, 125 non-indigenous, low water use trees have been planted throughout the course and more will be planted in the future. It is anticipated that the combined impact of these conservation initiatives will result in a 30-40 percent reduction in water use.
“We needed to make the course more challenging for the younger generation of players coming out today,” explains Todd Felsen, general manager of the resort. “We also renovated to save on irrigation expenses and conserve water — that was a priority for us.” The course renovation was designed by Rick Phelps, president of Phelps-Atkinson Golf Course Design. He says, “All of the things golfers loved about the golf course are still there, and all the things they hated about it are gone.” It is anticipated that the newly redesigned course will open on May 23rd in time for play on Memorial Day weekend.
Located alongside a private, 35-acre lake, Cheyenne Mountain Resort and Country Club also offers 316 finely appointed guest rooms, 18 tennis courts, racquetball and squash courts, a fitness center and an Aquatics Center, all of which are available to country club members and resort guests. Dining options include the Mountain View Restaurant, Will Roger’s Lounge and Pineview Grille.
